Marie Brennan and I have edited a special issue of Forum – for promoting 3 – 19 comprehensive education on ‘The Futures of Teaching’, based in part on work undertaken for the Monash Faculty of Education Inquiry into the Future of the Teaching Profession.
With contributions from a wide variety of educators and researchers from Australia, England and Norway, the issue looks at fundamental questions about teachers and teaching: the relationship between teachers and policy and between teachers, their students, and the communities they serve; the social and physical infrastructures within which teachers work, particularly school design; media representations of the profession and the datafication and intensification of teachers’ work; the evacuation of questions of educational purpose in the language of policy and teacher development; and the sustainability of leadership in contexts of heightened accountability, among many other issues.
With authors such as Nicole Mockler, Kenny Frederick, Greg Thompson, Benjamin Cleveland, Charlotte Wright, Jamie Lawes and Tom Are Trippestad, the papers vary in genre, style and length, representing a diverse range of perspectives on the question of ‘futures’.
