‘Transforming the Landscape of Teacher Education: Possible Futures for the Profession and Universities Working Together’
What teacher educators do matters. Reformers of university-based teacher education know that; defenders of the status quo think they do too. The nature of the work of the teacher educator is one of the most pressing public policy problems in many countries around the world. Based on a study of the work of university-based teacher educators in England – and situated in the international research context – this lecture will explore possible futures for the preparation of teachers, scenarios that will require rich understandings of both the profession of teaching and the necessary challenges posed by a ‘higher’ education.
