‘Academic work and proletarianisation’ published online

My article with Jane McNicholl, Allan Blake and Jim McNally, ‘Academic work and proletarianisation’, has been published online by Teaching and Teacher Education; print publication is in May.

The article stems from the ‘Work of Teacher Education’ research funded by ESCalate/the Higher Education Academy. Jane, Allan, Jim and I studied 13 higher education-based teacher educators in England and Scotland over the course of a year. We used a mixed methods approach including statistical analysis of work diaries and ethnographic-type observations. Theoretically, it is informed by CHAT and by associated Marxian labour theory and the idea of academic capitalism. It doesn’t tell a good story and has proved somewhat controversial in the more conservative teacher education circles (yes, they do exist!).

The article is available to download in the Articles section of this website.
